How can universities deal with the pressure regarding competitiveness, demography and geopolitics?

In spite of considerable differences, Japan and Sweden offer interesting university sector comparisons and challenges, such as: 1. Although Sweden’s highly educated population is often considered a key to the ability to punch above its weight Japan has a higher share of young people in tertiary education. 2. While Sweden has a smaller population than Japan, the Swedish university sector as a whole is relatively strong. 3. The Japanese population is shrinking rapidly. In Sweden the number of deaths will likely outnumber births in 2026; very soon the number of potential students will decrease substantially. Questions to discuss concern how the two countries’ university models can deal with the challenges: 1. Should the private sector take greater responsibility in funding higher education? 2. How can universities adapt to shrinking populations? 3. Should politicians take greater responsibility in defining research priorities for the universities?
